The Chelsea At Shrewsbury Featured
Published each year in the Spring issue of Environments for Aging, the EFA Design Showcase offers a compilation of architecture and interior design projects representing outstanding innovative design solutions in new or renovated senior care environments across the nation. A jury appointed by The Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments (SAGE), The Center for Health Design, the International Interior Design Association, and the American Society of Interior Designers reviewed submissions to the 24th annual EFA Design Showcase.
Opened in 2019, the Chelsea At Shrewsbury is a new, 3-story, 85-unit, 73,000 SF Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care community developed by Capitol Seniors Housing and operated by Chelsea Senior Living. With pre-sales totaling more than 50%, the community has been widely successful in terms of occupancy but also adapting to the community. The Chelsea at Shrewsbury was the first new senior living community developed in Shrewsbury in almost 20 years. In an area already replete with senior living options, Meyer designed a community that stood out from the pack while respecting the surrounding residential neighborhood.
Furthermore, Meyer worked collaboratively with Chelsea Senior Living to implement their programming philosophy of leisure, lifestyles and learning. The Tavern on the third floor pays homage to the Allen House, the most noted tavern in Shrewsbury built circa 1710. Its circular chandelier, wood ceiling, red brick walls, custom doors and comfy furniture provide the perfect setting to enjoy a beverage with friends and family. The design team drew inspiration from the Guild of Creative Arts, the largest and oldest art community organization in N.J., for the engaging, bright and open Art Gallery and Art Studio. This is an area where residents, families and staff can collaborate on creating and displaying artwork as well as a platform for local artists to interact and teach art classes.
