Atria New City is a three-story, 70,000-square-foot assisted living and memory care community located on five acres in New City, New York. This vibrant senior living community boasts a unique design not only because of its innovative design concept but also because the community’s style differs from traditional assisted living communities. Atria New City’s exterior has a contemporary look for a modern twist on senior living design. Its sharp lines and flat roof with natural elements of wood and stone create a warm and inviting ambiance on the outside. Inspired by the Hudson River Valley, the community’s interior features fresh tones of blue, green, and orange accents with purposeful pops of pattern woven throughout the carefully curated spaces with resident-focus in mind.

Entering the community, the lobby’s high ceiling and signature staircase open to a vast array of amenities and areas for activities and socialization. Amenities include public and private dining, a bistro with outdoor seating, a club room with fireplace seating, a sports lounge with an outdoor balcony overlooking the community entrance and the New City valley, a library with a children’s nook play area, a wellness center offering health check-ups and monitoring, and a multipurpose room for games and activities. Each amenity space is designed with flexibility in mind and has access to natural light through large, oversized windows.

Special considerations were also taken to repurpose and refurbish materials from an old horse farm and barn where the building now stands. Stable doors from the barn were repurposed as doors leading into the library. Hanging pendant lights were reclaimed and refinished as part of the bistro and wood was reclaimed from the barn itself to be used as mantels for fireplaces and as decorative beams on ceilings. All these details were thoughtfully put in place to ensure the overall design story was cohesive and paid homage to the site’s history.

For families facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, Atria New City offers a forward-thinking, innovative, and thoughtfully designed memory care neighborhood featuring a secure environment built as a loop that brings in an abundance of natural light and daily opportunities for social engagement. Within the memory care neighborhood, circadian rhythm lighting technology was installed to correlate with the time of day and mimic the pattern of the sun. Light fixtures are set to a lower intensity in the early morning, transition to higher intensity as the day progresses and reduced to a lower intensity in the evening through a controlled dimming system. Circadian lighting was strategically selected for memory care as studies have shown its positive effects on residents’ health, alertness, productivity, and more.
